Effect of oleo-gum-resin of Boswellia serrata (Kundur) on renal functions in Albino rats

چکیده
Oleo-gum-resin of Boswellia serrata Roxb. (Burseraceae) locally called ‘Kundur’, is one of the ingredients in certain Unani formulations used in renal diseases. In the present study, the effect of Kundur and its methanol soluble (MS), and methanol insoluble (MINS) fractions were investigated on Gentamicin induced nephrotoxicity in Albino rats. The renal effects of Kundur and its fractions were studied by monitoring urea and creatinine blood levels. Aminoglycoside antibiotics including Gentamicin are widely used in the treatment of Gram-negative bacterial infections. A major complication of the use of these drugs is nephrotoxicity. In the current study, treatment with Kundur its methanol soluble (MS) and methanol insoluble (MINS) fractions significantly prevented the rise in blood urea and serum creatinine levels. Our results suggest that Kundur and its (MS) methanol soluble fraction induced renoprotective action against Gentamicin induced nephrotoxicity probably due to the presence of compounds possessing antioxidant potential.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of crude aqueous extract of Boswellia serrata Roxb. oleo gum on urinary electrolytes, pH and diuretic activity in normal albino rats. Moreover, acute toxicity of the gum extract was assessed using mice. Albino rats were divided into five groups. Control group received normal saline (10 mg/kg), reference group received furosemide (10 mg/kg) and tes...

Objective: The hippocampal formation, particularly the dentate gyrus (DG), shows age-related morphological changes that could cause memory decline. It is indicated that Boswellia resins attenuates memory deficits and the major component of Boswellia serrata (Bs) gum resin, beta boswellic acid increased neurite outgrowth and branching in hippocampal neurons. This study was designed to investigat...

The resin of Boswellia species has been used as incense in religious and cultural ceremonies and in medicines since time immemorial. Boswellia serrata (Salai/Salai guggul), is a moderate to large sized branching tree of family Burseraceae (Genus Boswellia), grows in dry mountainous regions of India, Northern Africa and Middle East. Oleo gum-resin is tapped from the incision made on the trunk of...
